BOURNEMOUTH MODERN JAZZ CLUB NEEDS HELP! New committee members needed

BMJC needs new committee members, and/or anyone who thinks they have skills which would help us spread the word. We're particularly in need of a treasurer and, also, anyone who thinks they could help us market the Club. As it stands, BMJC is not pulling in the crowds we need to survive. This despite extremely positive audience feedback from those who do attend.

Unfortunately, we can't offer any payment, though you would of course get into every gig free.

If you believe you have skills we could benefit from, please email bournemouth.jazz@ntlworld.com

DEATH OF STEVE HARRIS

Steve Harris, co-founder of SoundStorm, and champion of free and improvised music, died on 11 January 2008, after a year long battle against liver cancer. Many people were unaware he was even ill, such was his stoicism and strength in fighting the illness, and he was seen playing live with Jan Kopinski at Lighthouse as late as November.

Steve did a huge amount for music in the Bournemouth and Poole area, as well as nationally through years in the music business, setting up the Safehouse musicians collective and the annual UNSAFE festival, as well as bringing fantastic music opportunities to many young people through SoundStorm. He came to national fame in the early 1990s with PINSKI ZOO. Lately, his free improvisation ensemble, ZAUM, had made huge critical waves, being described as "the most exciting band in Europe today" in the latest edition of The Penguin Guide to Jazz. He'll be greatly missed. If you want to leave tributes, you can do so at Steve's own website, link below.
